It is finally Christmas time and I hope you are in a good mood to enjoy this magic period of the year. Despite my origins, I have to admit that I do not like the beginning of winter season just because I am quite sensitive to cold and in a constant lazy mood. So the first colder days are a little bit traumatic. While I am stepping towards the holiday season, I become more enthusiastic, I think thanks to Christmas markets in town!
Vienna in the Christmas season is rarely beautiful! The pompous lighting everywhere, its atmosphere and the numerous Christmas markets enchant Vienna and its inhabitants every year anew.
If you like Christmas and everything about festive vibes, then Vienna is the ultimate place to be during the holiday season, as there are many markets to explore for more than a month and right until Christmas day. (Some of them even beyond Christmas).
Dress up well and avoid the more touristy Christmas Markets at Schönbrunn and Rathausplatz that although suggestive thanks to huge Christmas decorations, to me are too commercial and I do not feel Christmas atmosphere there.
At Christmas markets you have to try soups in Bread Bowl, Kaisekrainer (Sausage with delicate chees in the center), Maroni (chestnuts), Kaiserschmarrn, Lebkuchen (here gingerbread), Krapfen (filled doughnuts with Vanille, apricots jam or hezelnut cream), Glühwein (hot spicy wine) and Waldbeeren Punsch (punsch with red fruits).
