The southern part of the Styrian region, on the border with Slovenia, is a land rich in flavours and hills with breathtaking panoramas. Here you can immerse yourself in the idyllic vineyards, visit Buschenschanken, taste many of the best Austrian wines, pumpkin seeds oils and local products that you can buy directly from the wineries and farms along the “Südsteirische Weinstrasse”.
I stayed for a whole weekend at the Gut Pöessnitzberg, the ideal place to totally relax, pampered by their excellent wines and gourmet proposals, enjoying the wonderful panorama on the vineyards from their Kreuzwirt Restaurant and comfortable rooms. This was my second time here! The icing on the cake was the spa area with sauna, steam bath and the infinity pool. Can you imagine yourself during a sunset in the pool having a fruity Polz Gelber Muskateller? You should definitely enjoy that! Having a multi-course dinner on the terrace was even more than a delight: during the sunset when the sun was descending along the vineyards it was really Romantic! We all should indulge in more of these pleasures!
Discovering the surroundings.
Once you arrive by car at the Gut Pössnitzberg, the best way to discover the area and enjoy the view is to rent an e-bike directly at the reception or to hike along one of the many trails you can find there. We followed the path No. 9* of the Sulztal, which also passes very close to the Slovenian Herzerlstrasse. A spot that you can’t miss! As the name already suggests, from above the shape is of course a heart! Best spot to see it is a the Dreisiebner Štefka. *We have selected it from the Bergfex website, which is very comprehensive and easy to use. On the way you can reach numerous viewpoints, rest areas and wooden windmills.
Stop at the Buschenschanken and share a “Brettljause”, accompanied by a good glass of wine! A Buschenschank is a wines tavern operated only by Vineyards owners that propose only only cold dishes and homemade pastries as well as your own wines, fruits juices and home-made spirits. The Brettljause is their typical wooden dish consists of a cold cut selection (e.g. smoked meat, roast pork, ham, dry sausages) and homemade bread with spreads (e.g. liver sausage, gramelfat, pumpkin seed spread). I would strongly advise you to stop by Polz Buschenschank, Trunk, Repolusk and Tscheppe.
A visit to Vinofaktur can certainly not miss! It is the largest regional vinotheque in Styria where to find the best wines as well as culinary delicacies, such as pumpkin seeds oil, nibbles, pesti, vinegars, jams, honey, schnapps, chocolates, hams and much more…
Many thanks to Gut Pössnitzberg for the lovely stay! I will be back soon!
