Visit The Netherlands. Top things to do in The Netherlands. The Netherlands is mostly known for its canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes. Amsterdam, the capital has the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the house where Jewish Anne Frank hid. However there are many other pretty little towns and places to see which I had visited when my husband has lived there. I am grateful and appreciated the opportunity to visit the country but I would never live there. To me it is too wet, windy and also a bit gloomy and.. .brown. In fact I am not a big fan of the traditional archetype: those brown bricks houses.
When to visit The Netherlands? I would say in springtime and of course in summer thanks to longer days and warmer temperatures which allow you also to enjoy the beach. However, take in mind that its sea is just water, nothing special. The Netherlands is not famous for its beaches! 😉
Where to stay? Having base in Amsterdam you can easily organize daily trips everywhere and have more offers for night life. The country is small and the trains network is very good! Trains are frequent, fast and help you to go and come back all over the country in a day.
What to see and to do? Many things! I would give you my highlights.
Amsterdam, of course! It is nice to walk along the little streets and its canals. A daily trip to The Hague City center is also pretty nice! Rotterdam: I would not suggest you to visit it. In my opinion the city is nothing special but if you love music festivals, you have probably written it in your “to do list”!
Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Zaanse Schans, neighborhood of Amsterdam with its green wooden houses and mills.
Visit Utrecht and Maastricht. I have really liked them both. They are certainly cities with a less Dutch flair and more German-High German appearance with a medieval urban layout, I would say.
Tasting of herrings and the famous Dutch fries. Dutch cuisine certainly doesn’t leave a mark on hearts. However, streets food can be a source of satisfaction! My favourite fries are from Manneken Pis only in Amsterdam (located at Damrak 41) and Utrecht. Sandwiches with herrings are pretty good at Frens Haringhandel in Koningsplein in Amsterdam.
Febo, always on streets food theme, when you really have a stomach bug, try their automatic machines for hamburgers and croquettes. There are plenty of them in the various cities.
Visit the Rietveld Schröder House In Utrecht you have the honor to visit one of the masterpieces of the XX century.
The little town of Delft and its blue porcelain.
The Kröller-Müller Museum. If you love modern and contemporary Art, don’t miss it! The museum is situated in the middle of De Hoge Veluwe National Park, close to Arnhem city. Take a bicycle at the entrance and enjoy your journey enveloped by Nature and Art! It was a nice experience, I think the best one I had in The Netherlands.
Cycling to see the tulips! In April, along the bike path from the city of Haarlem through the cities of Lisse and Leiden for reaching Naaldwijk, where there is the largest market of tulips in the world.
Hope you have found good tips for your trip and don’t forget to bring with you umbrella and rain jacket!
